Luminosity segregation versus fractal scaling in the galaxy distribution

In this letter I present results from a correlation analysis of three galaxy redshift catalogs: the SSRS2, the CfA2 and the PSCz. I will focus on the observation that the amplitude of the two--point correlation function rises if the depth of the sample is increased. There are two competing explanations for this observation, one in terms of a fractal scaling, the other based on luminosity segregation. I will show that there is strong evidence that the observed growth is due to a luminosity dependent clustering of the galaxies.Comment: 7 pages, EPL in pres

Square-free class sizes in products of groups

We obtain some structural properties of a factorised group G=ABG = AB, given that the conjugacy class sizes of certain elements in A∪BA\cup B are not divisible by p2p^2, for some prime pp. The case when G=ABG = AB is a mutually permutable product is especially considered

Efficient single photon emission from a high-purity hexagonal boron nitride crystal

Among a variety of layered materials used as building blocks in van der Waals heterostructures, hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) appears as an ideal platform for hosting optically-active defects owing to its large bandgap (∼6\sim 6 eV). Here we study the optical response of a high-purity hBN crystal under green laser illumination. By means of photon correlation measurements, we identify individual defects emitting a highly photostable fluorescence under ambient conditions. A detailed analysis of the photophysical properties reveals a high quantum efficiency of the radiative transition, leading to a single photon source with very high brightness. These results illustrate how the wide range of applications offered by hBN could be further extended to photonic-based quantum information science and metrology.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

Self-pulsing dynamics of ultrasound in a magnetoacoustic resonator

A theoretical model of parametric magnetostrictive generator of ultrasound is considered, taking into account magnetic and magnetoacoustic nonlinearities. The stability and temporal dynamics of the system is analized with standard techniques revealing that, for a given set of parameters, the model presents a homoclinic or saddle--loop bifurcation, which predicts that the ultrasound is emitted in the form of pulses or spikes with arbitrarily low frequency.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure

Improved wear performance of ultra high molecular weight polyethylene coated with hydrogenated diamond like carbon

Hydrogenated diamond like carbon (DLCH) thin films were deposited on medical grade ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) by radio frequency plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition. The DLCH coating thicknesses ranged from 250 to 700. nm. The substrates were disks made of UHMWPEs typically used for soft components in artificial joints, namely virgin GUR 1050 and highly crosslinked (gamma irradiated in air to 100. kGy) UHMWPEs. Mechanical and tribological properties under bovine serum lubrication at body temperature were assessed on coated and uncoated polyethylenes by means of nano-hardness and ball-on-disk tests, respectively. Morphological features of the worn surfaces were obtained by confocal microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. This study confirms an increase in surface hardness and good wear resistance for coated materials after 24. h of sliding test compared to uncoated polyethylene. These results point out that to coat UHMWPE with DLCH films could be a potential method to reduce backside wear in total hip and knee arthroplasties.Ministerio de Ciencia y Educación MAT2006-12603- C02-01, CSD2008-0002

Wetland restoration and nitrate reduction: the example of the periurban wetland of Vitoria-Gasteiz (Basque Country, North Spain)

Changes in land use and agricultural intensification caused wetlands on the quaternary aquifer of Vitoria-Gasteiz (Basque Country) to disappear some years ago and nitrate concentration in groundwaters increased very quickly. The Basque Government recently declared the East Sector of this aquifer a Vulnerable Zone according to the 91/676/CEE European Directive. Recently, the wetlands have been restored through the closure of the main drainage ditches, the consequent elevation of the water table and the abondonment of agricultural practices near the wetlands. This is the case of the Zurbano wetland. Restoration has allowed the recovery of its biogeochemical function, which has reduced nitrate concentrations in waters. Nitrate concentrations which exceed 50 mg l–1 in groundwaters entering into the wetland are less than 10 mg l–1 at the outlet. Conditions in the wetland are conducive to the loss of nitrates: organic matter rich wetted soils, clay presence allowing a local semiconfined flow and very low hydraulic gradient. Water quality monitoring at several points around the wetland showed the processes involved in nitrate loss, although some aspects still remain unresolved. However, during storm events, the wetland effectively reduces the nitrate concentration entering the Alegria River, the most important river on the quaternary aquifer

Temporal relation between quiet-Sun transverse fields and the strong flows detected by IMaX/SUNRISE

Localized strongly Doppler-shifted Stokes V signals were detected by IMaX/SUNRISE. These signals are related to newly emerged magnetic loops that are observed as linear polarization features. We aim to set constraints on the physical nature and causes of these highly Doppler-shifted signals. In particular, the temporal relation between the appearance of transverse fields and the strong Doppler shifts is analyzed in some detail. We calculated the time difference between the appearance of the strong flows and the linear polarization. We also obtained the distances from the center of various features to the nearest neutral lines and whether they overlap or not. These distances were compared with those obtained from randomly distributed points on observed magnetograms. Various cases of strong flows are described in some detail. The linear polarization signals precede the appearance of the strong flows by on average 84+-11 seconds. The strongly Doppler-shifted signals are closer (0.19") to magnetic neutral lines than randomly distributed points (0.5"). Eighty percent of the strongly Doppler-shifted signals are close to a neutral line that is located between the emerging field and pre-existing fields. That the remaining 20% do not show a close-by pre-existing field could be explained by a lack of sensitivity or an unfavorable geometry of the pre-existing field, for instance, a canopy-like structure. Transverse fields occurred before the observation of the strong Doppler shifts. The process is most naturally explained as the emergence of a granular-scale loop that first gives rise to the linear polarization signals, interacts with pre-existing fields (generating new neutral line configurations), and produces the observed strong flows. This explanation is indicative of frequent small-scale reconnection events in the quiet Sun.Comment: 11 pages, 8 figure

Measuring the magnetic moment density in patterned ultrathin ferromagnets with submicron resolution

We present a new approach to infer the surface density of magnetic moments IsI_s in ultrathin ferromagnetic films with perpendicular anisotropy. It relies on quantitative stray field measurements with an atomic-size magnetometer based on the nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond. The method is applied to microstructures patterned in a 1-nm-thick film of CoFeB. We report measurements of IsI_s with a few percent uncertainty and a spatial resolution in the range of (100(100 nm)2^2, an improvement by several orders of magnitude over existing methods. As an example of application, we measure the modifications of IsI_s induced by local irradiation with He+^+ ions in an ultrathin ferromagnetic wire. This method offers a new route to study variations of magnetic properties at the nanoscale.Comment: 9 pages and 7 figures including main text and Supplemental Informatio
